Sean Strickland has done the unthinkable—again.
For the second time in three years, Strickland entered a UFC title fight as a massive underdog and left the cage with the middleweight belt secured around his waist. In 2023, it was Israel Adesanya who fell to Strickland in a result few predicted. On Saturday night at UFC 328, Khamzat Chimaev became the latest victim of the division’s ultimate spoiler.
Blending relentless pressure striking, reminiscent of the Philly Shell, with masterful defensive wrestling, Strickland claimed a split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47), handing Chimaev the first loss of his otherwise perfect MMA career.
Given the tightly contested nature of the bout, it came as no surprise that fellow fighters were divided on the outcome. Some praised Strickland’s performance, while others questioned the judges’ verdict. Middleweight contenders Nassourdine Imavov and Caio Borralho quickly called for their own title shots.
