Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez sparked controversy on Tuesday during a press conference, where he announced new club elections but drew criticism for sexist remarks directed at female journalists. Instead of reviewing the team’s season, Pérez targeted media outlets and reporters, revealing a dismissive attitude toward women in sports journalism.
The first incident occurred when he attacked the Spanish newspaper ABC, declaring, “I’m going to cancel my subscription to ABC.” He then singled out one of the paper’s reporters, stating, “Look at the two articles they published today, written by a woman, and I don’t even know if she knows much about football.”
Later, when a Fox Sports journalist attempted to ask a question, Pérez encouraged her with a remark that also mocked other reporters: “Go ahead, the young lady over there. She has the right to speak. You all look really ugly (referring to the other journalists present).”
The press conference ended with a defiant statement: “The enemies of Real Madrid in the media have now been identified. Florentino will not leave unless the members want him to.”
