Francisco Alvarez Leaves Mets Game Against Tigers with Right Knee Injury

NEW YORK — The injury woes for the Mets’ lineup continue as catcher Francisco Alvarez exited Tuesday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers during the sixth inning after appearing to tweak his right leg on a foul ball. Alvarez consulted with the team trainer, took a few practice swings near home plate, but then limped back to the dugout.

The Mets later announced that Alvarez is dealing with a right knee injury and is scheduled to undergo imaging on Wednesday. Luis Torrens replaced Alvarez behind the plate, drawing a walk after seeing three pitches, including two balls.

Torrens, who signed a two-year contract extension with the Mets earlier this week, is expected to take on a significant catching role if Alvarez misses any time. Hayden Senger remains the only other catcher on the Mets’ 40-man roster.

Alvarez had been active on the bases throughout the game. He beat out a potential double play to score the Mets’ first run, doubled in the fourth inning, and later scored the tying run from second base on a bloop RBI single by Carson Benge in the bottom of the fourth.

Through 37 games this season, Alvarez is batting .241/.317/.393 with four home runs, 10 RBIs, 12 runs, five doubles, and 28 strikeouts.
