I Considered This Possibility.” Bjørndalen on the Prospect of Becoming IBU President

Eight-time Olympic champion Ole Einar Bjørndalen has revealed that several national federations have encouraged him to run for the presidency of the International Biathlon Union (IBU).

“I have indeed been approached by many federations asking whether I would consider running. These were concrete requests. They came from European countries, but not from Eastern Europe. I’ve thought about this possibility. I would like to develop biathlon in the best direction and maximize the potential and value of international biathlon. However, I have never received such requests from Russia or Belarus,” Bjørndalen told Dagbladet.

According to IBU regulations, candidates for the presidency must be nominated by national federations before they can stand for election at the congress.

Dagbladet reports that Slovenian sports official Tim Farčnik, a member of the IBU Executive Board, is considered the leading candidate for the IBU presidency.
